Higher Fuel and Travel Costs Put Caravan Budgets Back Under Pressure

September inflation figures highlight why loan repayments are only one part of the ownership equation

Fresh Australian inflation figures have added another reality check for households planning a caravan purchase, upgrade or refinancing decision.
The Australian Bureau of Statistics reported that annual CPI inflation rose to 4.3% in the 12 months to September 2026, while trimmed mean inflation lifted to 3.6%.
For caravan buyers, the important point is not just the headline number; it is where the pressure is showing up in everyday touring costs.

Transport prices rose strongly over the year, with automotive fuel the main contributor. Recreation and culture costs also increased, including domestic holiday travel and accommodation. Those categories matter because a caravan budget does not stop once the loan contract is signed. Fuel, park stays, insurance, servicing, storage, registration, accessories and unexpected repairs can all affect whether the ownership plan remains comfortable.

The figures arrive while caravan and camping demand remains resilient. Caravan Industry Association of Australia statistics for the year ending June 2026 point to 17.9 million overnight caravan and camping trips, 60.8 million visitor nights and $13.6 billion in domestic visitor spend. That suggests Australians are still valuing road travel, but stronger demand can sit alongside higher trip costs, particularly during school holidays and major events.

For households comparing caravan finance options, the lesson is to test the whole cash-flow picture rather than focusing only on the advertised rate or the monthly repayment. A caravan finance calculator can help illustrate how different loan amounts, deposits, interest rates and terms may change estimated repayments, but it will not capture every running cost or future price movement.

Useful budget checks include:

  • allowing for higher fuel use when towing, especially on long regional trips;
  • comparing insurance, storage and servicing costs before settling on a model;
  • leaving a buffer for repairs, tyres, battery systems and safety upgrades;
  • checking whether a longer loan term lowers repayments but increases total interest;
  • thinking about seasonal travel costs, not just average annual expenses.

There is also a rate-setting backdrop. The Reserve Bank lifted the cash rate to 4.60% in late September, and the latest inflation data will be closely watched before its 3 November decision. That does not automatically mean every caravan loan rate will move in the same way, because lenders also consider funding costs, competition, borrower risk and the asset itself. It does mean buyers may benefit from building more cautious assumptions into their planning.

The broader message is simple: caravanning can still be a valuable lifestyle choice, but current cost signals favour preparation over optimism. Understanding total ownership costs before committing can make the difference between a caravan that supports travel plans and one that stretches the household budget too far.
